Big Men Fly!

Practicing "Speckies" at the Saturday Morning Footy program in June. For this drill, it is useful to have a former professional basketballer holding the ball up! (Kurt played for the Tasmanian Devils in Australia's National Basketball League).
In the drill, players run up and leap on to the bag then look up to put grab the ball. As they get better you can change things and toss the ball in the air, so players can practice their leap and timing. They also get a lot of practice falling!
Speckie practice is by far and away the most favored drill for the older players.

Saturday Morning Footy kicks off with a bang

Big day for the start of Saturday Morning Footy. Over 70 boys and girls from all over the Washington DC area descended on Bluemont Park in Arlington to have a kick of the footy.

In great weather, the program began with kids and parents learning the basic skills of footy including kicking and hand passing. Then there were fun games and finally what everyone was waiting for - the big game. The Demons took on the Mighty Saints, the Bombers went up against the Crows and the Eagles took on the Blues.

Thanks to Deena Ackerman for the great pics!
